CAN(N)ON is the result of a process led collaborative project between Jamie Kirk & Sam Owen Hull that explores the connection between their practices. The artists have created collaborative works via a 2 month long postal exchange, sending materials and part-made works to each other in a medium sized box, without any written or spoken observation. Through this exchange, the artists seek to explore the language of materials and what can be said through making alone.
This exhibition will present both the works created during the postal exchange, as well as existing solo works that encourage the viewer to find further connections between the artists’ practices.
Sam Owen Hull’s work explores the spaces between opposing states and ideas, searching for a temporary resolution to balance the difficulty of existing within an increasingly polarised world. Her practice immerses her in the language of materials, attempting to reconstruct the expected elements of painting into a new and unexpected form.
Jamie Kirk’s paintings are abstract compositions of multiple layers, with an eclectic range of colours and expressive mark making generated from an interest in paint’s materiality. By exploring ideas conceived from introspective observations, commentaries on society and his immediate environment, the work balances abstraction and figuration in opposing quantities.
The Preview will take place on Friday 14th March, 6-9PM, and include a conversation with the artists from 7:30PM - 8PM. All are welcome to attend, no booking required.
After the preview, the exhibition will be open to view on Thursday, Friday and Saturday 11AM - 4PM, free of charge, throughout the exhibition run. Our gallery is invigilated by a small team, so please book ahead on eventbrite here or email luca@1853studios.co.uk to help us manage our team.
